Year 1 – 26.01.24
Phonics
In phonics this week we have revised the phase 5 diagraphs wh, ph, ew and oe. We have also practised reading and spelling the tricky words were and there. Please keep using the flashcards at home and spending some time on Fast Phonics.
English
This week in English we spent time finishing our Tyrannosaurus rex fact booklets. The children have done such a wonderful job! They have worked hard to use lots of adjectives in their writing and joined their ideas using the conjunction ‘and’.
We also used our reading dogs in our whole class reading lesson about fossils.
In handwriting we practised the letters q,o,e and s.
Maths
In maths we have continued to look at numbers to 20. This week we have been comparing numbers using the language of greater than, less than and equal to and the symbols >, < and =. We have also looked at ordering numbers from smallest to greatest and from greatest to smallest.
Here is a problem solving question to try at home.
Art
We have been creating our own dinosaur silhouettes in art. First, we used watercolours to create a background. Then we cut around dinosaur silhouettes and stuck these onto our background. Some children chose to add some extra details using a black felt tip too!
Science
In science, we have continued to investigate materials. This week we went on a material hunt around our classroom. We were able to find objects made out of plastic, wood, glass, fabric and brick. We discussed the properties of different materials and why objects were made out of certain materials.
PSHE
In PSHE we discussed what was the same about each other and what was different. We discussed physical differences such as eye colour and hair colour and then we spoke about our likes and dislikes. We read the story Elmer and we all chose something that makes us unique and drew a picture of it.
Computing
In computing, we followed an algorithm to create a crazy creature. We realised that the instructions in the algorithm were not specific enough because our crazy creature did not look like the intended outcome. We decided to write the instructions again and this time all of our crazy creatures looked the same.
Leeds Art Gallery
We will be going on a school trip to Leeds Art Gallery next week. A letter containing more information was sent out earlier this week. Please remember to return the permission slip on Monday if you have not already done so.
Have a lovely weekend,
The Year 1 Team
