Year 1 – 28.03.25
Phonics
In phonics this week we have revised the trigraphs air, ear, ure and are. We have also looked at the alternative digraphs oi/oy. We finished the week by looking at when g says j like in magic and c says s like in rice.
Maths
In maths we started our unit on measurement. We began by comparing the length and height of objects using the vocabulary of longer, taller and shorter. We then used non-standard units of measure including paperclips and cubes to measure the length of objects. We finished the week by looking at centimetres and used rulers to accurately measure the length of objects.

English
We started the week by finishing our senses booklets. They are fantastic!
On Wednesday, we received a letter from someone called Doris. They told us that they had laid an egg somewhere on our school grounds and asked us to follow the clues to find it. We were very excited to find a large, blue, glittery egg!

We discussed what we thought might be inside the egg and then we all drew a picture.

We decided to write Doris some questions to try find out more information about what might be inside the egg. When we arrived at school on Friday the egg had hatched but the creature had gone! Doris left us a letter thanking us for looking after her egg and left us some clues including scales, slime and some burnt paper!
Science
In science we continued with our unit on the human body and combined this with our maths measuring lessons! We decided to carry out three experiments to find out the answer to three body related questions.
Can longer legs jump further? We measured our leg length and then measured how far we could jump.

Can longer arms throw further? We measured our arm span and then measured how far we could throw a straw javelin.

Can bigger hands pick up more cubes? We measured our hand span and then how many cubes we could pick up.

Computing
In computing we carried on with our unit on coding. This week we used a programme on Purple Mash called ‘Air Traffic Control’. We used code blocks to make planes take off.

Little Sing
We had an amazing time at the Little Sing event at Pudsey Civic Hall this morning! The children thoroughly enjoyed their ‘Minibeast Rave’.

Have a lovely weekend,
The Year 1 Team
