Farsley Farfield Primary School

Year 1 – 29.09.23

Design Technology

When we arrived at school on Monday there was a trail of vegetables in our classrooms! We followed the vegetables and found a book and a letter from a boy called Oliver!

Oliver asked us to visit the school farm and harvest some vegetables to make delicious vegetable soup. We picked vegetables from the farm and then prepared them using our peeling and cutting skills. We then cooked and blended our ingredients together.

When our soup was ready we all had a taste!

Science

After our visit to the farm we looked at the vegetables we had harvested as well as some of the vegetables that Oliver had left us. We discussed how vegetables grow and then sorted them into vegetables that grow above the ground and vegetables that grow below the ground.

English

In our English lessons we have been writing a recount of our soup day. The children are working hard to remember capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. Look at our wonderful writing!

Art

In art this week we mixed primary and secondary colours to make a colour wheel.

We then used our colour mixing and observation skills to paint still life vegetables inspired by Cezanne.

Phonics

In phonics this week we have revised the sounds th, ng, sh and ai. We have also revised tricky words into and we.

Maths

This week in maths we have been looking at counting on from any number and identifying one more than a number within 10. We have also practised counting back from any number and identifying 1 less than a number within 10.

We have used what we have learnt to answer reasoning and problem solving questions like this one.

Reading and Phonics in Year 1

Your child will come home with a letter inviting you to attend a meeting on Wednesday 18th October 2023. During the meeting we will be discussing the Year 1 Phonic Screening Check and how to support your child with reading and phonics at home. We really hope that you will be able to join us at one of the sessions. The Google Meet will be recorded and available to watch for those unable to attend either session.

Here is the letter with more information:

Have a lovely weekend,

The Year 1 Team
