Year 2 19.01.24
English
We have been focussing on instructional writing in our English lessons this week. We began by identifying the different features of instructions and looking at different examples of these. We have been tasked to create our own marvellous medicine, just like George! As a class, we created our own wonderful concoctions by mixing together sticky, blue hair gel, gloopy, pink bubble bath, white, minty toothpaste and brown, chocolatey powder. Although it smelt quite nice, we didn’t give it a taste! We wrote up our ingredients using expanded noun phrases and practised listing items using commas to separate them. We are looking forward to writing some instructions for making our marvellous medicine next week. Will you be giving it a try at home?
Spellings
This week we have been looking at words ending le- little, apple, middle etc. We have also practised the common exception words: clothes, only, both, father, money.
Maths
We have concluded our work on shape by looking at patterns with both 2D and 3D shapes and completing an end of unit quiz. We have now moved on to our new unit of work, Money. We began by identifying different coins and notes and had a go at adding these together. Well done to everyone for their fantastic efforts on Mathletics; it is great to see so many children achieving certificates.
For homework this week, we would like you to look at some coins at home and practise making some totals. There is a recording sheet to complete in homework books. Please also complete the money activities on Mathletics.
History
We have absolutely loved learning more about Florence Nightingale this week. We found out that she was born in Italy and spent her childhood in England. We watched a video about her life and her journey to becoming a nurse in the Crimean war. We then had a closer look at the route she took to get there and considered how she would have been feeling throughout her journey. Next week, we will be exploring the changes she made to the hospital.
Computing
In computing this half term, we are using a painting programme on purple mash to create pictures in different artists styles. Last week, we looked at work by the impressionist painters and this week we have been looking at pointillism. You could look at these again at home!
Cooking
This week’s group thought their stir fry was delicious!
