English

This week, we have started exploring our new class text, George’s Marvellous Medicine. We began by using clues from the front cover to help Predicting Pip make accurate suggestions about the characters and plot. We think that a boy called George is going to create a magical medicine for an old woman using a concoction of potions and we can’t wait to find out if we are right! If you have a copy at home, feel free to bring it into school to read along with the teachers.

After reading the first chapter, we explored some of the language and carried out some word studies on the new, unfamiliar vocabulary such as mischief, dozing, grumbling and selfish. We then looked at the vocabulary that was used to describe grandma and used this to build up our own character descriptions.

We are trying to encourage the children to add more detail to their sentences and this week we focused on using the conjunctions who and that. The children wrote sentences such as: Grandma is a mean, grouchy lady who is always complaining and bossing George around. Grandma is so small that she needs a footstool for her tiny legs.

Spelling

This week we have been looking at words ending y making the ‘igh’ sound such as my, fly, cry, reply, July.

We have also been learning the common exception words beautiful, pretty and people.

Maths

This week we have continued our shape topic by learning all about the properties of 3D shapes. We have counted and described their faces, edges and vertices. Please complete the activities set on Mathletics to consolidate this.

History

A collection of strange artefacts arrived in our classrooms this week. We looked at each one carefully and made predictions about who they belonged to. Some of them looked very old and the photograph was in black and white so we assumed they came from somebody in the past. The owl seemed a peculiar item but the bandages gave us a good clue that they belonged to a doctor or nurse. We eventually guessed that they belonged to Florence Nightingale and made a list of questions that we would like to find out about her in our new topic.

Science

In science we have started to look at the properties of materials. We looked at some everyday objects in the classroom and said what material they were made from and identified some of their properties. We introduced the following words: hard, soft, rough, smooth, heavy, light, transparent, opaque, flexible and rigid!

Cooking

This half term the children in Year 2 will get the chance to make a vegetable stir fry served with noodles! The first group of children practised their chopping and grating skills and enjoyed the finished dish.
