English
This week in English we enjoyed reading ‘Follow the Swallow’ by Julia Donaldson. It is a really lovely story which introduces two main characters, a swallow and a blackbird; they learn about each other and what they do throughout the seasons.
We have listened to the story and given our opinions, creating a short review of the story. We then looked at some of the sentences in the story and practised writing our own sentences to describe some of the different characters. Finally, we created some story maps as we tried to ‘follow the swallow’ through his journey in the story. Next week we will be thinking more about the characters and will be writing a postcard from the swallow to the blackbird.
Here are some of the story maps we created:
Spellings
This week we are learning the alternative spellings for the ur sound. Plus the common exception words mother, father, any.
Maths
We have been subtracting this week. We have used different resources to help us. Here are some children using the tens frames:
In today’s lesson, we have used tens and ones to help us subtract a 1 digit number from a 2 digit number crossing tens. Here are Blush and Pudsey to show us what to do!
- Pudsey is trying to solve 23 – 5. He has made 23 with 2 tens and 3 ones.
- He exchanges 1 ten for 10 ones. Thank you Blush!
- Now Pudsey has enough ones to subtract. He can take away 5 ones and has 18 left.
Computing
We have been learning how to use spreadsheets in our computing lessons. We have learned about columns, row and cells. The children have practised selecting cells and adding text or images. This week we made a zoo! Children added animals to their spreadsheets and learned how to lock them in and move them using different tools.
Cooking
This week’s group loved their yummy spaghetti with tomato sauce. Here we are chopping, stirring and eating!
