English

This week in our English lessons we have been writing non-chronological reports all about animals that live in the polar regions. We used the facts that we had found out during our research lessons last week and put these into our own sentences. We used a title and subheadings to set out our work and used a range of grammatical features in our writing such as questions and conjunctions to expand our sentences. We did a brilliant job!

Spelling

This week we have been learning the rule for soft c. The letter c makes a ‘s’ sound when followed by i, e or y.

We also looked at the common exception words even, every and everybody.

Maths

We have started learning all about shape in our maths lessons this week. We began with a practical lesson where we sorted 2D shapes and match them with their names and properties. We then moved on to identifying different 2D shapes. The children have counted the sides and vertices (corners) on different 2D shapes. Next week we will be drawing 2D shapes and learning about symmetry!

History

Last week we asked enquiry questions about this photograph:

This week we found out that the photograph showed Robert Scott and his team at the South Pole. But were they the first team there? We learned all about their Terra Nova expedition and the events that happened. The children were fascinated and asked lots of interesting questions. We ordered some pictures to retell the events and then created our own 4 part timeline to put the main events in order.

Geography

Have you ever heard of a polar bear jail? Neither had we until we started learning about a place just outside the Arctic Circle, in Canada called Churchill. We loved learning all about what life is like in Churchill and the amazing animals that live there. We located it on a map, discussed what it would be like to live there, then created our own fact file posters to tell people all about the area.
