English

This week, we have been celebrating all things fireworks! We have spent the week exploring poetry and looking at the language and techniques used by a range of poets. After reading a selection of firework poems as a class, we chose our favourite and added actions before performing to the rest of the class. We then collected right choice verbs and adjectives to describe fireworks and explored how we could use some alliteration for effect. Finally, we put all of our learning and ideas together and had a go at writing our very own firework poems in an acrostic format.

Guided reading

We have done our guided reading lessons as a whole class this week, focussing on a poem – ‘Firework Night’ by Enid Blyton. We began by listening to the poem, echo reading it and reading it with a partner to build up our fluency. We then spent a lesson focussing on each of our reading dogs to take a deeper look into the text and answered a range of retrieval, inference and vocabulary questions.

Spelling

This week in spelling we have been looking at all the different spellings of the oa phoneme oa/ow/oe/o-e/o

We have learned the common spellings would/could should by using the phrase oh u lucky duck!

Maths

In Maths, we have been subtracting from and across ten using a range of methods such as tens frames, part-whole models and number lines.

Art

We produced some beautiful poppy art this week using a range of materials. We explored some artists work first and talked about the different features of each landscape. We then chose our materials to create our own poppy landscapes. The children were very proud of their work.

Geography

We have started our new geography topic on the Polar regions. We began by looking at where the equator is and how the countries close to it have a hotter climate. We then located the north and south pole and discussed how the climate in these places is much colder.
