English

This week, we have been writing our very own reports all about animals that live in the polar regions. We began by using a range of non-fiction books and the chromebooks to research facts about different animals and recording these on our planning maps. After recapping the features of a report, we put our facts into sentences and set our work out carefully using subheadings and even some of our own pictures!

Spellings

This week we have been looking at the soft ‘c’ sound. We discovered that when c is followed by an e, i or y, that it makes the ‘s’ sound.

Whole class reading

We have been exploring a non-fiction text called ‘Penguins’ with our favourite reading friends Rex Retriever, Vocabulary Victor and Sequencing Suki. Using echo reading to develop our fluency, we have been reading the text together as a class before moving on to answer a series of questions independently.

Maths

This week we have continued to apply our understanding of addition and subtraction. We have continued to use base 10 to practise adding or subtracting 2 digit numbers.

Now we no longer have access to Mathletics, we would like to remind you that there is a free app or web version of 1 minute maths from White Rose.

This will be really useful to consolidate the learning we have been doing in school.

History

Continuing on from our work around Scott’s expedition to the South Pole, we have been debating whether these events actually happened and where we can look for proof. We looked at a series of photographs to gain a clearer understanding of the events that unfolded during his exploration of Antarctica. We even looked at some extracts from Scott’s personal diary. We came to an agreement that he was a very brave explorer despite being a little unprepared! We wrote a passage to explain who he was and describe his achievements.

Geography

What would you do if you saw a polar bear walking down the street? Apparently, if you lived in Churchill, Canada, you would put it in jail! This week we have been finding out what it would like to live on the edge of the Arctic in the town of Churchill. Not only would you spot polar bears out on the tundra, you may also see some beluga whales and the northern lights. After locating the town on a map and our globes, we created our own fact file posters.

Art

This week we have created the northern lights using sparkly paints and created some polar bear drawings.
