Year 4 Blog 1.3.24

It has been another great week in Year 4!

Maths
The children are nearing the end of theirLength and Perimeter unit. This week, children have been learning how to find the perimeter of regular and irregular polygons (polygons are a closed 2D shape with straight sides). Children quickly learnt that regular polygons have equal length sides and equal angles, which makes finding the perimeter quite simple! They then progressed to learning how to find the perimeter of polygons with unequal sides, so they used lots of efficient mental addition strategies to support them with this. Have a look at the videos below to recap this learning.

English
In English this week, we have started reading The Boy at the Back of the Class (TBATBOTC) and have focussed our English work around this. The children began by exploring the importance of narrators. The children learnt that narrators could either be a part of the story, where they would write in first person, or an outsider, in which case they would write in third person. In the next lesson, children looked in more depth at the narrator in TBATBOTC and what she may have felt or thought at various points as a new boy joined the class. This then lead to the children writing a diary entry from the narrator’s perspective, where they used a range of grammatical features, such as time conjunctions and other fronted adverbials. The children did a great job of conveying the thoughts and feelings on the narrator in their writing.

Science
In Science this week, children learnt about the classification of living things, focussing primarily on vertibrates. The children understood that classifications were created by grouping living things by specific characteristics, for example, flowering and non-flowering plants or vertibrates and invertibrates. We looked more closely at vertibrates and learnt about the 5 main classifications of these, which are mammals, reptiles, birds, fish and amphibians. The children then looked at the characteristics of these animals and were able to explain why they fit into certain groups. Children then used all of this knowledge to create Google Sites to explain what classification means.

Football Tournament
We are really proud of the children who represented Farfield at the football tournament on Thursday this week! They played really well and worked together as a team against some tough opponents!
