Year 4 Go Bananas!
We have had a very busy week in Year 4. In addition to their usual lessons, the children have also completed their summer assessments in both maths and reading (which they all worked so hard on). 4Ke also had a fantastic time in Burnsall, though we will keep all of the photos and more information on the trip until 4L go next Friday so keep an eye out for the next blog if you’d like to know more about what went on!
English
In our English lessons this week, we have been continuing our work on ‘Cloud Tea Monkeys’. Our main focus this week was on using the present perfect tense, which can be quite tricky to use in our writing even though many of us will have done so at some point in our lives. We decided to imagine that we were the main character Tashi and that we were writing letters of thanks to the monkeys that helped her. Of course, since we were writing to monkeys, we decided to use bananas instead of paper! After creating our initial drafts, the children were each able to use biros to write them out as neatly as they could on their fruit. We even got to eat them all afterwards so that there was no waste!
Science
In science, we have been exploring the different states of matter, particularly how to change a solid to a liquid and vice versa. To this end, each group planned an investigation into what affects the rate at which ice melts. The children chose one variable to test – either the size of the ice cubes, the shape of the ice or the temperature the ice was in. The testing itself took lots of patience and careful observation, but the children all did really well regardless. We also had some interesting variations between groups and had to think carefully about what might have caused these differences.
Science Superstars
Next week, we will be hosting auditions for our upcoming ‘Science Superstars’ competition. Any children wanting to take part will need to bring in the resources on the day of their auditions. We reccomend thaat the children have a go at their experiment at home beforehand to make sure everything works as intended.
- 4Ke will be holding their class auditions on Tuesday 25th.
- 4L will be holding their class auditions on Thursday 27th.
We hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
Miss Levett and Mrs Kenvyn
