Year 5 blog 9.12.23

Good evening parents and carers,

We have had another busy and fun week in year 5.

We begun the week with some full length rehearsals, which went well. We are really looking forward to the performance. If your child is on this list, please don’t forget to bring your child’s clothes in a named plastic bag. Here is the list. We could also do with some Scouts or Brownie neckers for the Skunks if anyone has any we could borrow. Mr Harris sent an email about obtaining tickets with a form to fill in which I have copied below. Parents/carers of Year 5 children are entitled to 2 tickets.

Local History

As part of our local history topic, both 5KH and 5HB enjoyed a walk around Farsley to look at some historic listed buildings. We also completed a trail around Sunny Bank Mills to find out about the history of the Mill and its workers, which was the main emplorer in Farsley during the industrial revolution and has contributed greatly to the development of Farsley over time.

Maths

In Maths we have been working hard on using common denominators to order fractions and will be moving onto adding and subtracting fractions next, using a similar method. We have therefore given some adding fraction questions for homework.

English

In English we have been looking at biographies and autobiographies. The children have been fascinated to learn about some famous historical female scientists, who contributed towards our understanding of space and science. For English homework we have asked the children to learn some of the Year 3 /4 spelling list or Y5/6 spelling list depending on where they are up to.

In 5KH we have been enjoying having a spellathon based on these spellings. Well done to Henry who won the Year 5/6 spelling list competition! We will begin the year 3/4 spelling list competition next week. Hopefully, this will give an incentive to the children to practise!

In 5KH we have also begun building our Mars rovers as our DT project (photos to follow next week). The children impressed me with their excellent listening, teamwork and skills when making these. We used saws to make the frames out of wood and wire strippers, cells, motors and switches to build our circuits.
