Year 5 Blog WB 25.9.23

We have had another fantastic week in Year 5. We have packed lots of learning in and the children continue to impress us with their attitudes and learning behaviours.

Maths

In maths this week, we have finished our unit on Place Value. Children have been building on their knowledge of rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000 from Year 4 and are now rounding numbers to 1,000,000 (to the nearest 10, 100, 1,000 and 10,000). You can support your children to understand the importance of rounding by showing them when you use rounding in real life situations (e.g. when doing the shopping). It is important that children hear and use the language of “rounding to the nearest” rather than “rounding up” and “rounding down”.

Below is an example of the way we have been teaching the children to round.

English

In English this week we have been continuing to study The Odyssey and began to study the features of newspaper reports. Children will begin planning and writing their own newspaper report next week. With the increasing popularity of online news, we have found that children are less familiar with the layout of a printed newspaper than previous cohorts. It may be helpful to buy a newspaper this weekend and share articles that your child would be interested in.

PE and DT

Children continue to enjoy their PE lessons and the weather was kind to us this week. 5KH are currently completing a gymnastics unit and 5HB are playing hockey. The classes will swap after the half term.

Children have also been making pots in preparation for ‘Greek Day’ on Tuesday next week. Children enjoyed designing their pots and then learning about how to shape to pot and attach handles. We will add our designs as part of our Greek Day.

Greek Day

I’m sure that the children have been reminding you that it is Year 5 Greek day on Tuesday 3rd October. Children should come dressed in an ancient Greek outfit. If you are struggling to find one, an outfit can be made with a sheet and some rope. We will be completing fun activities all day as either Athenians or Spartans and learning about the differences between the two civilisations.

Homework

This week children will have a maths sheet on Place Value and a spelling worksheet to complete. As always, homework is due in by Wednesday next week.

Have a lovely weekend,

The Year 5 Team
