Year 5 Blog WB 6.11.23
We’ve had a busy first week back after the half term break with lots of exciting learning taking place. It was also lovely to speak to so many parents this week. If you weren’t able to attend parents’ evening, please remember that you can make an appointment to see us at any time of year and you are always welcome to look at the learning in your child’s book.
This half term we are very focussed on our Christmas performance which will take place in the final week of the half term (only 6 weeks away now!!). Some children have quite a few lines to learn and have a script which they can bring home. Any help you can give them to learn their part will be very much appreciated!
English
In guided reading we have been studying the book ‘Curiosity: The Story of a Mars Rover’. Children began by using the front cover to make predictions about what the book could be about and then began using their retrieval skills to answer comprehension questions. Later in the week, they took on the role of a journalist and came up with questions for a scientist who was involved in the creation of the Mars Rover. Below are some examples of the children’s work and a video of astronaut Nick Hague reading the book.
History
Our history unit this half term will be a local history study about how Farsley has changed over time. We began this unit by thinking about where we live (at a local, national and international level) and children were able to use their learning from Year 4 to identify what is special about Farsley, Leeds and Yorkshire (Yorkshire tea received quite a few mentions!).
The Knowledge Organiser from this unit is below and it would be worth spending some time looking at this with your child to help them to remember the essential ‘sticky’ knowledge from this unit.
Homework
Homework has been sent out today and is expected to be handed in by Wednesday 15th November.
Maths- worksheet on multiplying by 10, 100 and 1000.
English- worksheet on plurals.
Children are expected to read at least 5 times per week as part of their homework and can access a wide variety of learning platforms such as Mathletics, TT Rockstars, Spelling Shed and Purple Mash.
Have a lovely weekend,
The Year 5 Team
