Year 6 28.3.25
Solar for schools
Year 6 were climbing high this week with a visit from James who works for Solar for Schools UK. This brilliant company strives to ensure that our children grow up with the mindset of sustainability and it starts with the solar panels on our roof. James taught Year 6 a little more about why solar energy is so important and then each class went up to investigate our solar panels on the roof of the infant building and learn a little more about how they worked. James also brought in his science kit which had some really fun things to investigate.
Here are some photos of 6D up on the roof and exploring solar cells.
How can you make your heart beat faster?
In science this week were were investigators: looking at the difference that exercise made to our heart beat. First we had the tricky task of finding our pulse and then the children worked in groups to complete difference exercises and work out which one raise their heart rate the most. We had a lovely afternoon in the sunshine and many of us found that activities such as jumping and burpees were tougher on our muscles and therefore raised our heart rate more as our body needed more oxygen.
Here are some photos of 6J in the throes of their experiment.
English
We have begun a new genre of writing this week – explanation texts of the circulation system. We promised writing from the Highwayman though and here it is – the children worked so hard on using a variety of tenses in their writing and trying to include dialect to bring authenticity to the character of Tim the ostler. We are really proud; this was a tricky bit of writing and shows just how far we have come in Year 6.
Maths – angles, angles, everywhere.
This week in Year 6 we have been concentrating on angles. Measuring with a protractor can be complicated at first – try this interactive app to sharpen up your skills.
We have also been learning to calculate angles using what we already know in a given shape. This week it was triangles – here is a video to help revise the strategies we have learnt this week
