Year 6 residential Day 1

We have had a super day with 6D on residential. The weather is glorious but not too oppressive as it is cool in the shade of the gorge (or in a cave).

After an hour’s drive, we arrived at Coldstone Cut on Greenhow Hill. This amazing bit of public art overlooks a quarry and has lots of great views and interesting information boards. We learnt about lime kilns, the local geology and 16 points of the compass.

We arrived at glorious How Stean Gorge and saw our tents. The children (left) and Mr Harris (right) were perfectly happy with their tents. Our female staff, for some reason, were not happy.

After a threat of a strike (another one!), the ladies got an upgrade very nearby!

In the afternoon we split into 3 groups for our first activity.

Group 1:

Brodie
Jas
Parminder
Alfie
Aaryan
Jasleen
Amrit
Sophia
Mason
Emily

This group did the Via Ferrata course this afternoon. Lots of the children really pushed themselves and were encouraging each other. Emily was like ‘spiderman’ and Brodie confidently led the group. Jasleen was also impressively confident.

Group 2:

Joe
Ella
Cassydy
Arthur
Holly
Jude
Sabeeka
Mani
Jenna

Group 2 went caving. This was a bit more challenging than the Y5 caving, with more glacial mud and less water. There were some really tight sections in caves 2 and 3. Everyone did the first two caves, and 5 of the 9 did the final very tight cave. All of the group did really well and seemed to enjoy it. We learnt a bit more about geology, especially the prevalence of chert (a dark sedimentary rock from algae) amongst the limestone.

(I am sorry for missing Mani in the caves. I don’t know how that happened: maybe he was always at the front and I was at the back. Mani was one of the best cavers, completing all three caves.)

Group 3:

Will
Zane
Arjun
Lilith
Isla
Elsie
Aicha
Molly
Liam
Eden

Group 3 did abseiling and gorge scrambling. A couple of children passed on the abseil, but everyone got into the water and had great fun. Lilith was the first child to do the abseil and then cheered her peers down. Again, the children challenged themselves and were mutually supportive. Laughter echoed around the gorge.

This evening the children have gone for a local walk and then will have some recreation time before bedtime.

Let’s hope they sleep in but I fear that the sunshine and the ‘noisy’ countryside may wake them at an unsociable time…
